Introduction to The Canadian Ice Core (CICA)
Dr. Martin Sharp
This session will include an introduction to the newly created Canadian Ice Core Archive, housed at the University of Alberta. It will include a short introduction to ice core science, the current ice core collection, and plans for future ice coring activities in Canada, followed by a tour of the facility, where the cores will be on display.
Martin Sharp is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta and the Director of the Canadian Ice Core Archive. He is a glaciologist with 40 years of field experience on glaciers in the Canadian Arctic, Antarctica, Alaska, Iceland, Norway and the Swiss Alps. He has worked on glacier-climate interactions, ice dynamics and glacier hydrology, the biogeochemistry and microbiology of glacial systems, and the role of glaciers in storing pollutants and then releasing them as "legacy pollutants" into the broader environment. He has been a lead author on 2 scientific assessments of Climate Change in the Arctic for the Arctic Council.
